Vietnamese Coffee in Ten Facts

1. Vietnam is world’s second largest coffee producer in total production after Brazil, and grows nearly twice as much per acre.

2.   French colonists introduced coffee in 1857. All four commercial species of beans are grown in Vietnam: Arabica, Robusta, Excelsa and Liberica. There are many varieties and hybrids under cultivation.

3. Coffee was mainly cultivated in the perpetually mild climate of the Central Highlands

4. Robusta + Coffea euginoides = Arabica. A freak mutation allowed these two species to combine their 22 chromosomes. Arabica’s 44 chromosomes explain its extraordinary complexity in flavor and aroma.

5. Coffee was planted and managed by state-owned agricultural and forestry enterprises in 1980

6. After 1986, Economic Reform policy (Doi Moi) , put Vietnam on track to become a world leader in coffee production.

7. The majority of coffee farmers in Vietnam belong to ethnic minority groups, many with strong tribal identities that persist in the 21st century.

8. The coffee harvest in Vietnam spans from October to April each year.

9. Vietnamese coffee is cultivated on ancient volcanic slopes whose acidic Basalt soil is favored for high quality coffee production.

10. In Vietnam, coffee is made by using one single brewing method which is Vietnamese coffee filter (Phin)

  • Wonder why our tasting notes include fruit, cocoa, floral flavors... etc? — Of course we don’t use additives. These natural characteristics of our coffee emerge from the botanical identity of each bean varietal along, with the distinct processing methods used by each farm.
Coffee’s flavor and aromatic profiles, are among the most chemically complex in the culinary world.

  • DECODING OUR COFFEE LABEL
From top to bottom:
Cau Dat: a place specifically where our coffee is grown in Vietnam

Single Origin: indicate what country of origin the coffee is sourced
Tasting Notes: These natural tasting notes based on factors of soil’s location, the way farmers process, how you brew them and how it’s roasted.

Whole Bean: tell you that the coffee, you purchased will be fresher compared to pre ground
Washed: Alike wine, coffee is being processed before it is consumed. Washed is a type of processing that will separate coffee seed from its cherries. requires a minimum of 24 hours soaking coffee seeds into the water to ferment. After reaching the correct PH from fermentation, farmers will rinse coffee’s seeds and start drying on the raising bed under the sun. This process method creates a clean cup with a subtle hint of acidity
